UMHLANGA – Two men were buried alive when the trench they were digging collapsed on them yesterday at 3 pm at a construction site on Umhlanga Rocks Drive near the Ilala Ridge area.
Reports from the scene suggest that workers were busy with excavation of a trench on the site for the placement of cables, when the sides gave way, causing the trench to collapse, burying two workers alive.
Marshall Security’s medical support team, Netcare 911 as well as the Ethekwini Fire and Rescue Services freed the men both aged between 30 and 35, from the soil. Netcare 911 Emergency care practitioners worked to stabilize the men on scene before they were placed onto specialized stretchers and taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital for further definitive care.
The men remain in a serious but stable condition.
The scene was later handed over to the necessary authorities for further investigation.
