TONGAAT – On Tuesday, 19 July at about 11am, the swift reaction by SAPS Tongaat Visible Policing, K9 Unit and Tactical Response Team led to the recovery of boxes of cigarettes and British American Tobacco,that where stolen in Sandfields area, Tongaat.
The driver, who was delivering boxes of cigarettes in the area, was attacked and hijacked of the vehicle by unknown gunmen, the driver was then taken to a secluded area where he was dropped off and instructed to leave. He quickly alerted police who swiftly responded and led police to the suspects where the cigarettes and the vehicle were recovered. The suspects fled on foot on police arrival.
A case of hijacking has been opened at Tongaat police station for investigation and police are searching for the fled suspects. The value of the cigarettes where approximately R130 000.
The Tongaat SAPS are still searching for the hijackers.
The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bhekinkosi Langa commended police on their swift reaction to the hijacking case and assured that the suspects will be arrested soon as investigation continues. “We appeal to the community to assist us in tracing the suspects by providing us with information about their whereabouts. We also discourage people from buying stolen goods and report it to the police,” he said.
