DURBAN NORTH – An armed response officer was assaulted with a spade when responding to a report that three suspects had attempted a robbery on Balmoral Drive at 2 am this morning.
Marshall Security armed reaction officers were immediately dispatched after the resident reported that he had seen three suspects on his property. Further investigation revealed that three armed suspects were on the property, and had damaged a window in an attempt to break in. The reaction officer was assaulted with a spade after a scuffle broke out between the suspects who were armed with garden tools believed to be stolen. A call for backup was made and all available vehicles in the area responded to the scene.
The suspects were found fleeing down the road and a foot chase ensued before the armed response officers apprehended and arrested the suspects. On arrest one of the suspects attempted to stab the reaction officer, who then fired a shot striking the suspect in the leg.
The assistance of emergency care practitioners was called for by the armed response unit control room and the man was attended to on scene before being taken under police guard to a nearby hospital for further care.
The scene was later handed over to the South African Police Services for further investigation and processing.
