MEREBANK – Yesterday, 1 June 2016 at 6:30pm, police where informed of a hijacking at Merebank where a silver Mercedes Benz was taken from the owner who was reversing out of the yard. Members of the Provincial Vehicle Task Team and Durban South K9 Unit immediately responded and spotted the vehicle on Himalaya Road.
A high speed chase ensued however the suspects lost control of the vehicle and overturned as they attempted to enter the Glebelands Hostel. The suspects managed to exit the vehicle and opened fire at police in an attempt to escape. During the ensuing gun battle all three suspects were wounded and died at the scene. The suspects are aged between 20 and 25 years old. Three pistols were recovered from the suspects and will be subjected to ballistic examinations to determine if they were used in any incidents of crime.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bhekinkosi Langa applauded members who were involved for responding so swiftly and tracking down the suspects to ensure the safety of the community. “We are relieved that none of our members were killed by these criminals. This incident once again highlights the dangers faced by our police officers when dealing with criminals. We however remain committed to fighting crime and ensuring that our streets are safe and we will not be intimidated by armed thugs,” he said.
