LA LUCIA – Meet Gordon Timm and Raymond Frances. These senior ‘goodfellas’ form a musical duo called The La Lucia Minstrels, keeping patrons entertained from 8am – 2pm with the sounds of Frank Sinatra and other classic hits in La Lucia Mall’s parking lot. “We’re old now and because we can’t work any more, we thought it would be great to bring our passion for music to the pavement,” said 77-year-old Gordan from Newlands East.
His partner in chime, Frances who is 78 years old, travels from Phoenix to strum along with Timm. Both musicians learnt to play as children and Frances who started strumming at 6 years old has mastered the guitar while Timm, an expert on the banjo, began playing at age 12.
Timm is a retired drill operator, while Frances was once a switch board operator. They were always passionate about music. They started out by playing in a band from 1955 and never stopped. Their favourite song to play is Frank Sinatra’s ‘Fly Me to the Moon.’
These handsome fellows dress up in colourful uniforms, hats and fancy suit tops and play the part that looks similar to the The Kaapse Klopse, a Cape town Minstrel festival.
For busy shoppers with errands to run and lots of worries, the sounds of music light up a dreary underground car park with soothing melodies.
Here a video of the duo doing what they do best.
