BALLITO – Early on Women’s Day at about 6:30am one security guard was shot dead during a shoot out that ensued between a group of guards and suspected robbers. It was reported that upon the arrival of security guards at the scene in Ballito where a business robbery was in progress, a group of suspects opened fire,fatally wounding one of the guards who later died and injuring others. The suspects fled the scene in a white Mercedes C class getaway car.
Umhlali members gave chase and the suspect’s vehicle stopped at the Tongaat toll plaza. One injured suspect was arrested while the others fled the scene on foot. Police are still searching for the remaining suspects. The getaway vehicle was recovered as well as the stolen items which included several computers.
KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bhekinkosi Langa said, the SAPS condemned the attack of the security agency members while executing their duties. “We will not rest until we arrest all those who are involved in this crime. The arrested suspect will be profiled to see if he can be linked to other business robberies reported in Umhlali and surrounding areas”.
