AMANZIMTOTI – In the early hours of the morning ,yesterday (June 1), the Umlazi K9 Unit conducted a sting operation after police received a tip-off about fraudulent activities that were occurring at the service station in Amanzimtoti. Police proceeded to the area where they arrested a 25-year-old male. The suspect was found near the ATM, withdrawing cash and he had 36 Sassa cards in his possession with pin codes written on them. He was arrested and taken to Amanzimtoti police station for detention. He will be charged for fraud and contravening Electronic Communication and Transaction Act. He will appear in court soon.
Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bhekinkosi Langa commended the members and their canines on the arrest. “Sassa cards and undisclosed amount of cash were seized from the suspect. The investigation will continue to establish if he is not linked to other crimes where Sassa cards were used. The police will also establish as to where and how the suspect got these Sassa cards,” he said.
