UMHLANGA – A dangerous car chase and shootout between police, security personnel and several notorious suspects resulted in the final arrest of five of them.
After a series of brazen business robberies in the uMhlanga area, law enforcement, in a crime prevention operation, finally managed to track down a silver Hyundai i20 packed with occupants believed to be responsible for a number of business break-ins in the area.
When the SAPS approached the vehicle, the driver attempted to flee. A high speed chase ensued through the Somerset Park area. The suspects then opened fire at the SAPS members. Upon cornering the Hyundai, police were able to apprehend one of the suspects. However, the other four managed to flee again and proceeded to Mount Edgecombe where they crashed their vehicle down and embankment and into one of the gated estates, after police managed to shoot and injure one of the occupants.
A further three suspects were arrested. The fifth suspect was said to have fled into the estate and hid in near by bushes. He too was found an apprehended.
At approximately 5am today, a shootout and car chase ensued between Durban North SAPS, Marshall Security and five suspects in a get-away vehicle.
Upon further investigation it was ascertained that the silver Hyundai i20 was hijacked in Mayville recently a firearm was also recovered at the scene.
Durban North SAPS spokesperson, Cpt Raymond Deokaran, said: “The have suspects are in custody and a case has been opened at the Mayville police station. It was a good effort from both police officers and security personnel involved. The station commander commends their efforts.”
