MAYVILLE – A policeman based at the Durban Harbour police station was brutally killed on Friday (29 July), after he was allegedly stabbed to death by a man said to have been a tenant at his home, in Greenfield Mayville.
The incident happened around midnight, when Constable Immanuel Mbele (32), was stabbed on the left side of his chest with a sharp object while he was on the toilet. According to sources, Mbele, the landlord from whom the suspect had rented a property from, had asked the suspect , a Malawi national, to leave the premises to reside elsewhere. Mebele had also allegedly asked the suspect to take his brother with him as the brother had been sickly and was not able to pay the rent. It was alleged that the suspect then slapped Mbele, but Mbele had overpowered him and took him out of the yard. Mbele then returned to his residence. However, it was when Mbele had been off-guard and had gone to relieve himself, that the suspect allegedly returned to the house, and cornered him while he was on the toilet. He stabbed him on the left side of his chest. Mbele was rushed to the King Edward hospital but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries two hours later.
SAPS spokesperson Thulani Zwane said: “No arrests have been made and a case of murder has been opened.”
