WESTVILLE – The UKZN protests have turned violent as students have taken to burning vehicles and campus property.
Last night SAPS members were dispatched and rubber bullets where used to disperse the violent student protestors.
At the moment, UKZN management cannot disclose the reason students are protesting but have confirmed that campus has been closed and classes are suspended till further notice.
Spokesperson of the SAPS, Col Thulani Zwane said, “Rubber bullets were used to disperse the violent crowd of students. Police are still on campus monitoring the situation and a 26-year- old student has been arrested.”
Students are venting their frustrations on social media and one has claimed to have been shot with a live round. However, management of UKZN have refuted these allegations as there were no notification of any students harmed by live rounds and
Col Zwane has requested that if anyone was wounded with live rounds to immediately come forward and report the matter to the police.
