SCOTTBURGH – A gang of 10 robbers, heavily armed with rifles stormed the Scottburgh Mall at about 1 am this morning.
The robbers set off bombs at the FNB and Absa ATMs inside the mall before breaking into the banks. Responding quickly to the blasts, police and Magma Security fired at the robbers and a shoot out took place between the two sides. “They tried to bomb the main safe but were unsuccessful,” said a Magma Security response officer.
The officer reported that the robbers parked their vehicles on the freeway and guarded the entrance to the mall with R5s, R4s and AK 47s, shooting at security vehicles that attempted to enter. “There were about 10 robbers who arrived in two Isuzu bakkies,” said the officer.
The robbers allegedly got away with a large sum of money from one of the banks, although an official figure remains undisclosed.
“The suspects fled the scene and remain at large. A robbery case has been opened and SAPS will be investigating further ,” said Provincial spokesperson for the SAPS, Colonel Thulani Zwane.
Scottburgh Mall management has confirmed that the mall is open and safe for trading, although an official comment from management about the incident is pending while SAPS investigate.
