Illegal drag racing that occurred on Durban roads on Saturday night led to a serious collision that left two people injured.
According to Durban Metro Police, the drag racing took place outside various BP, Shell and Engen petrol stations.
In video clips of the incident being circulated on social media, cars were videoed on Umgeni Road racing and spinning their vehicles. In the videos, bystanders are shown looking on.
One of the videos depicted the collision that ensued between two vehicles which led to bystanders fleeing the scene.
Despite the events being depicted appearing to be illegal drag racing, Emer-G-Med spokesperson Kyle Van Reenen suggests that it is only a speculation as to what may have occurred.
“It is alleged that the incident is related to illegal street racing activities in the area, however, this is speculative and will form the subject of a SAPS investigation,” van Reenen shared.
Durban residents have been left divided on the matter. Some have stated they do not believe the drivers should be punished too severely as they feel drag racing is a part of Durban culture. While others strongly disagree with this sentiment.
