DURBAN – A man died when he was engulfed in flames as his vehicle caught alight after a collision on the M4 northbound just after 9:15 pm this evening.
The driver was unable to free himself from the wreckage and was found deceased having suffered severe burns.
Marshall Security were alerted to the serious collision and reaction officers were immediately dispatched. Reports from the incident reveal that a driver was heading north on the highway when he lost control of the vehicle at high speed causing it to collide with an armco barrier before bursting into flames.
Crisis Medical paramedics responded to the call to find a vehicle in flames with the driver entrapped inside the wreckage. The only passenger of the vehicle managed to escape before the vehicle was completely engulfed in flames.
Paramedics on the scene treated the passenger, a male aged 23 who had sustained moderate injuries and second degree burns. Once stabilised, he was transported to hospital for further care.
The cause of the incident is unknown and the scene will form subject of a SAPS investigation.
Ethekwini fire and rescue were on the scene and extinguished the fire.
