Durban High School hosted their 3-day Hockey Festival recently at the Riverside Sports club which saw 12 schools including DHS, playing matches in celebration of DHS’s 150th birthday year.
Hockey has a long-standing history at DHS. “The first recorded hockey game was played at DHS in 1913. There were 12 inter-house games during the course of the year, of which the Boarders won seven. The first recorded school game can be found in June 1914 School Magazine Edition. A team went to Umzinto and, after an extra half, DHS won 6-3. Recorded to date, there have been 125 DHS boys representing KZN Schools, 21 boys representing SA Schools and 13 SA International Hockey Representatives. ” Researched and written by Wendy Snelling, Debbie Bromham, Jeremy Oddy with “pooled” recollections of Christopher Harris and Keith McIver.
