Mtubatuba High Court convicted Zibuyise Halakahla (20) and Simlindile Mdledle (21) to a total of 30 years imprisonment each for murder and robbery. On Sunday, April 15 the two accused were found guilty and were sentenced to 10 years for robbery and 20 years for murder.
On 4 March 2012 at Berea road Durban, two university students were standing on the road at about 9pm when they were approached by the two accused. One of the victims was robbed of her cell phone and the companion was chased with a knife. A bystander, Elvis Mbambo (45) who witnessed the incident came to their rescue but was also attacked by the accused and stabbed 14 times. Mbambo died instantly. A murder and robbery case was opened at Durban Central police station. The Durban Metro police, who were conducting crime prevention duties, saw the accused and gave chase. Both accused were arrested and charged with murder and robbery, they appeared in court and bail was opposed.
KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni welcome a heavy sentence handed down to the killers. “ This will serve as a warning to other criminals who want to do such crimes”, she said.
