BEREA – In the space of a week, members of Berea SAPS cracked down on crime in the area, executing separate cases for robbery and driving under the influence of alcohol.
In the first incident, Friday, 12 August at 10pm a joint operation between SAPS and Metro Police were held on Florida road as a means of a road block and five people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Thereafter on Saturday, 13 August at about 5am police were patrolling along Musgrave road and noticed a suspicious 24 year old male riding an expensive looking bicycle when they stopped and questioned him as to where he got the bicycle from, his statement was found to be unconvincing. After thorough questioning he was then charged with being in possession of suspected stolen property. He appeared in court on Monday, 15 August.
The following incident reported on Sunday 14 August at 7.30pm, whilst police were patrolling along Essenwood Road they noticed a suspicious 19 year old male carrying a ladder and some tools when the police stopped to question him he dropped the stuff and fled , police members gave chase and the suspect was arrested. He was charged for being in possession of suspected stolen property.
“An appeal goes out to the public asking them to either use a metered taxi service or get family members to drop and pick you up when you indulging in alcohol. Community members will be charged because you are not only endangering your life but the lives of other road users,” said Berea communications officer CPT P.N Naidoo.
“We urge the public to please be alert and aware. Always be on the watch out and be one step ahead of criminals. It is reported that theft of motor vehicles are still a concern, so when parking your vehicle check your surroundings to ensure you are not being followed.Be on the lookout for suspicious vehicles or persons especially when in dark areas,” he added.
