DURBAN – The Artisan Development Programme which will see eThekwini Municipality facilitate 10 000 youth artisans over three years, is now open to receive applications.

The City is offering training opportunities to individuals with a genuine interest in pursuing a career to qualify as an artisan in any of the following trades: Electrical, Motor Mechanic, Diesel Mechanic, Wielding, Air-conditioning/Refrigeration, Boilermaking, Millrights, Fitting and Turning, Plumbing and Carpentry.

The criteria states that applicants must not be older than 35 years of age, must be residents of eThekwini and must be unemployed. The project is also in line with the City’s Employment Equity Strategy with 60 percent of the intake being women.

The estimated total cost of the project is R742.1 million which includes tuition fees, monthly stipends, and material and project management.

City Manager Sibusiso Sithole said they wanted people who would be diligent and committed to their studies to apply. “Candidates will be required to complete an apprenticeship programme as per the specified and regulated criteria of the applicable SETA and the National Artisan Moderating Body,” he said.

The programme will involve practical training on-site as well as attendance at a training institution to obtain the theory component.  At the end of the programme the apprentice will undergo a formal trade test to qualify as an Artisan in the relevant trade.

Applicants are required to complete the eThekwini Municipal application form indicating the name of position applied for. Applications forms are available at Sizakala Centres and at 221 Anton Lembede Street, Shell House Building. Applications are to be hand delivered at the same address. The closing date for applications is June 10, 2016.
